Congratulations, Dr. Hill!
Dr. Joseph C. Hill accepted the 2024 Warren Schwab Memorial Award at our event. We are so proud to present this award to Dr. Hill, who has championed dedication and commitment to sociolinguistics and has published detailed research about the attitudes and ideologies across signing varieties in the American Deaf Community.
Dr. Hill is an Associate Professor in the Department of ASL and Interpreting Education, Associate Director of the Center on Culture and Language, and Assistant Dean for Faculty Recruitment and Retention at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institutes for the Deaf (RIT/NTID).
Sharing Our Why
We are grateful for your continued and generous support in helping us to create an environment where deaf and hard of hearing children and adults thrive by having the knowledge, opportunity and power to design the future of their choice.
As many as 70% of deaf children are experiencing severe language deprivation. Among the families and communities of Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color (BIPOC) deaf children, the language deprivation is much more prevalent due to a systemic lack of access.
Language deprivation is defined as the lack of developmentally appropriate proficiency in any natural language. The consequences of language deprivation are devastating and impact a deaf child for the rest of their lives if not strongly addressed between birth and age five.
We are committed to eradicating language deprivation through our multiple programs including the Badavas Parent Infant Program, the Early Childhood Center, and our three school programs: Marie Philip School, Walden School, and Public School Partnerships.
When you choose to give to TLC, you will be investing in the future of more than 2,000 deaf and hard of hearing individuals, students, and families. Thank you for making a difference!
